Florida: Dry Tortugas

Finaly the day came, for which I was waiting the most. Day in which we are moving 70 miles on west from Key West to a place called Dry Tortugas. The seven islands originally named Las Tortugas (The Turtles) by explorer Ponce de Leon in 1513, these islands soon became known as 'Dry Tortugas' on mariners' charts to show that they have no fresh water.

This fascinating place has its history... Built in the mid-18oo's to protect the important ports of the Gulf of Mexico region, Fort Jefferson never fired a shot in battle! Once used as a military prison, the Fort was 'home' to Dr. Samuel Mudd. Convicted of complicity in the assassination of President Lincoln, Mudd was sentenced to life imprisonment.
By the 1880s, the Army had abandoned Fort Jefferson; in 1908 the area became a wildlife refuge. Proclaimed Fort Jefferson National Monument in 1935, it was designated Dry Tortugas Natioal Park in 1992 to protect its natural and historic wonders.

Our trip departure was in early morning with ferry called 'Fast Cat'. On board, we enjoy delicious breakfast and lunch as well as the view at the Ocean. Than we started to see our destination:

Soon. we were staying on Dry Tortugas... Amazed by the scenery our four quick decided to build our new home (a tent). After unbelievable short period of time it was preared. Not wasting any minute, we got our snorkeling gear and off we went to enjoy the beauty of white sand beach and the shallow water.

It wasn't long and it started getting late. We took another walk around and inside the Fort. In the late afternoon we had just enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

After adventurous night (with lack of proper equipment) came the last hours of our time in Dry Tortugas. Of course, we spent most of it at the beach - enjoying beautiful clear water.
